Hi all,
I'm looking at upgrading my computer as i want the ability to play Hi-Def content, video editing faster and also play newer and better games.

I've already decided i want a G43 based motheboard as this provides me with PCI-Express 2.0 (x16) and the on-board is decent enough to use until i can afford a decent card. I've already got most parts, just need the Ram, Mothebroard and CPU. The Ram i've already decided on too (2x 1Gb Corsair), the motherboard I was thinking of ASRock due to the Windows 7 compatability, InstantBoot and most importantly - price.

The CPU is my issue. For the same price i can get a Core2Duo e5300 @ 2.6Ghz as i can an e6600 @ 2.4Ghz. Or for a little less i can get an e6550 @ 2.33Ghz. Which CPU would be the best option, and if it's one of the e6xxx series, would the e6600 give me any real noticable performance increase or would it purely be a benchmarking competition?

Kind regards,
James

The new E6500 or E6300 sounds pretty good. I wouldn't buy old CPU like E6550 or E6600.
And I wouldn't buy a motherboard just because is compatabil with Windows 7 especially Asrock. This is just a marketing thing. You can Asus, Gigabyte, MSI,etc and still will be compatabil with Win 7.

I thought the e6550 was newer (according the another post around here), and the e6300 i'm referring to is the 1.86Ghz model.

I looked at the ASUS equivelent of the ASRock board and it's only got 1/5 stars and the ASRock has 4.5/5 stars. This was one thing that sorta swayed me as before i have always gone for ASUS boards. Also, the CPU must have Intel Virt tech, but i'm thinking all the cpu models i listed above have this?

Yes, 6550 is a really old CPU. I suggest you to buy Asus or Gigabyte.
I'm referring to newer E6300 (2.8 ghz) and E6500 (2.93ghz) and yes, this cpus have intel virtualization technology.
Also E5300 is a good option and you can OC very well.

You should investing more money in this if you want to do video editing and play newer games. Maybe you should think about buying a quad after all.

Thanks for your reply, i hear what your saying but my budget is very limited. I really just need to know which would give me best performance between the e5300 @ stock (2.6Ghz), e6300 @ stock (1.86Ghz) and e6550 @ stock (2.33Ghz). I mean my video editing i do is Cinema 2K resolution (i produce digital cinema content) and currently i'm doing it on a Pentium D @ stock 820 2.8Ghz and this isn't bad actually, but i am just after it being quicker. I may also be able to stretch to an e6750 @ stock (2.67Ghz). Thanks for your replies so far.

You are talking about pretty old CPU except E5300 (all of them on 65nm). Of course E5300 is better.

Maybe E6750 is better because has more cache memory but still...is a 65 nm CPU where E5300 is 45nm. I would still go for E5300.
