i am trying to connect my son's desktop to the internet but my router is in a seperate room and i don't want to run a whole lot of cables. i have a laptop i was wondering if i could use a cable between the laptop and the pc to get the internet on the other side of the house?
Have a look at Windows Internet Connection Sharing -- you link the computer which is connected to the router to the second machine by a crossover ethernet cable (as a dealer). If a computer lacks an ethernet socket, it's quite simple to add a Network Interface Card.
The main drawback of ICS is that both machines have to be on.
