I currently have two 8600GTS in SLI with a 19" monitor at 1440x900. I am looking at a HD4870 and a 23" widescreen monitor at 1920x1080, both are the same price.
The 8600's run most of my games at high with no AA at 50+ fps on my 19" monitor.
Would it be better to have a 4870 running games at 1440x900 or have two 8600's push a 23" monitor?

Ditch the 8600s and grab a 4870 1GB, then save up for the monitor. You'll be happy.

2 8600GTS' in sli will run horrible on today's games @ 1920x1080.

I think you need both.
I would get the larger monitor first. You can always reduce the resolution if needed.
If you get the 4870 first, you will probably be disappointed if you don't see much results.
Also, the vga card will probably drop in price faster than the monitor, so an early buy of the monitor will not be a decision you will regret.

I'd go 4870 first then monitor at 1400x900 4870 shouldn't see a performance drop compried to 8600gts in sli could even see a performance gain. Why not go GTX260? scene you have sli mobo why and will be going for 1920x1080 resolution which is hard on a single card.
