Complete noob to coolers, want to overclock 955 BE

Hi there, I'm just going to get right into it.

Here are my specs(that matter):
AMD Phenom IIx4 955 Black Edition Processor(currently with the NASTY stock cooler)
Crosshair Formula III Motherboard
Antec 1200 Case
Corsair Dominators without the fancy fan you see with them sometimes
Corsair 850w powersupply

I want to get 3.8ghz out of my processor, maybe even 4(if thats possible without liquid cooling?)

Whats a good cooler that will help me accomplish this?

Also, I want to get some more ram into my CPU, originally back in 09 I bought this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145249 (Corsair Dominators 4gb ddr3 1600 9-9-9-24 - TW3X4G1600C9D G)

And now that their de-activated, alls I can find are these...yet theres a $25 price difference...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145260 (CORSAIR XMS3 4gb DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 - CMX4GX3M2A1600C9)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145323 (CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 - CMD4GX3M2A1600C9)

So please help everyone! Also, I have never removed a CPU cooler before, so if you know of any videos that will explain how to remove old thermal paste and whatnot, it helps! :)

  2. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/258023-29-installing-cooler-master-hyper

^^In the sticky at the top of the forum. It isn't the exact same cooler, but most will install/remove in about the same way.

I guess it depends on your budget for the CPU cooler.

Always ensure your case airflow is optimal; even the best air coolers will fail to cool well unless there is adequate airflow inside your case. You have an Antec 1200 which are pretty good cases, but make sure you have good fans in place and all cabling is cleaned up.
  3. The Coolermaster Hyper 212+ or Scythe Mugen 2 are both great coolers for under $40.
  4. You'll have to be very careful choosing a cooler for Dominator ram.
The current kits are 52mm tall and your old kit looks taller to me like 54mm.
If you plan on adding more ram you'll have to remove the heatsinks off at least one module.
Amd mobo's have less space between the socket and dimms then an Intel.
The Hyper 212+ is probably your best bet or a Thermalright MUX-120 is even better for clearance but you won't find one of those under $40.
  5. Would the Hyper 212+ be able to keep up if I cranked the 955 all the way up to 3.8ghz though??
  6. fyi my 955BE is a c2 btw. so i prlly only will be aiming for 3.8ghz

You should be alright i've seen plenty of 212+ reviews using an i7 920 at 3.8Ghz and it's similiar wattage wise to a 955.
Your 955 actually is a cooler running cpu.
Best case scenario is to add another fan to the 212+.
You're case has excellent airflow being a 1200.
You can actually add a side panel fan in the 1200 unlike my 902 when using a cpu cooler.:(

  8. Go to YouTube for videos on how to remove and replace cpu. Noctua NH-D14 / Xigmatek Achilles S1284C R2 are pretty good air coolers for cpu. Make sure you get some good quality thermal paste as well. I use Antec formula5 silver thermal paste, it seems to work pretty good. You will get 4.0Ghz no probs with one of those coolers.
  9. idk exactly how adding another fan to the hyper 212 would work, I like the idea though. I just don't know what fans to buy(some more blue lighting would be cool), including a possible side fan. Would an extra fan screw into the new heatsink or does it just clip in or what?

The Hyper 212+ comes with additional fan mounting brackets, I would suggest if you run 2 fans on the cooler use matched airflow fans that output a minimum of 78cfm, 9 blade fans can give the same cfm at lower noise and that also needs to be a consideration.

The additional fan will probably only increase your cooling performance by 1c, so don't expect earth shattering results from adding a 2nd fan or you will be disappointed, if Cooler Master thought after their own testing the 2nd fan was necessary, it would be in the initial purchase.

    ROFLMAO

You pulled off that merge while I was typing my reply, when I posted it and looked back at it, I was What The?????
  13. Okay so I think I'm set on my decision of the hyper212+, now as for thermal paste, your saying it doesn't come with the cooler?

Any good additional fans that work good with this cooler you guys could suggest then? Pref blue color if possible?

Paste comes with the cooler as well as a second set of fan clips.
CM makes R4 2000rpm sickleflow blue led fans and quite franlky they're louder then 19db.
I know i bought one for my CM690II as a exhaust fan.
The price is right and they do move alot of air.

You could always put the R4 Blademaster(stock 212+ fan) on the back of one of your hd cages.
I have a tri-cool(low) on my 902 mounted like that and it dropped my 5850 by 2C.
  15. Thinking of getting two of these instead(same price each as that blue CM fan when you order 2), considering my antec 1200 is always running at high fan speeds and sounds like a damn spaceship is in the corner of the room, I dont think I will even notice the 'loudness' people complain about

Most people go with the F models but whatever Scythe fans are much better imo.
Good led fan but difficult to find.

  17. Don't waste your money on fans and crap on the hyper212+.The Noctua blows this cooler away on 2 fans maybe 8-10C under full load.Bang for buck the 212+ is the best of the cheapies. The best of the best is Noctua forget the rest. That is for air cooled....
  18. Hyper 212+ is awesome I've used it in almost all my AMD builds never had fitment issues and I've gotten 965's well past 3.6ghz while staying under 45 degrees
  19. Bought the products :D

    Running 955 BE at 3.8ghz(oced)
Ram running at 1900mhz(oced) - dunno if i was suppose to go this high? was highest option in bios tho
2 scythe fans for push pull
put the fan that came with the hyper on the side of my antec 1200

in total theres 9 fans running in my rig! xD

Idles as low as 39c, and runs stress tests/games under 49c so far.
