How futureproof is the LGA 1366?

you should wait for the i5 ,the i7 is meant for work stations or high end machines and the upgrade path for that socket will always be expensive,technically speaking the core i5 is the cpu that is meant for the mainstream and is replacing the core 2 chips,so that is where you should be focsuing on since the upgrade path will be priced better and the price to performance ratio will make more sense.
 

If you are looking in the future( 2010) for a cpu with 6 or 8 cores, then lga 1366 is the only route.
If a quad core or less will suffice, then a cpu for the lga 1156 will be very good in september.
If you need to build now, get what suits you now. In two years, all the current best products will be old hat again.
