Do I Need To Format New HDD

I have just got a new external hard drive and want to know if I need to format or if it is already done.

Most external drive I believe come formatted. Plug the drive in and look in my computer and see if you see it.
If not then go into disk management and see what it says. If it sees the drive but lists it as raw then you can create the partition and format.
I bought a 1.5TB WD external that was already formatted.
