Is the GA-MA790XT-UD4P a good board for the AMD Phenom II X3 740, possible crossfire and about 3gb ram?

Yes obviously, might want to look at GA-MA790GPT-UD3H, both video slots run @16 versus 1@16 and 1@8. Some trade offs GPT has on board video, 6vs8 on both sata and usb and 1 1394 vs 2 1394 ports. $10.00 less ? for GPT right now

i am more of a gamer is i think that the 2 video slots @16 is more important. what do you put in 1394 ports anyway?

1394 ports, or firewire, is used for things like connecting external drives or camcorders mostly. If you don't know what it is used for you probably won't need it.
