Can't intialise Sata Hard drive.

Hello,
I have this 500GB Sata hard drive (New). I've attached it as secondry drive and it shows in the bios. But when I try to intitialise it in Disk Manager, it locks the computer. Any ideas?
I'd be grateful. Could this just be my unlucky day to have struck a faulty drive?

Hi there. Thanks for replying to my question. I'm running WinXp Home, SP3. Yes it showed up in the bios on the sata drive. It also showed up in Disk Manager, so the computer knows its there. It just won't initilize it.
