So im building my very first pc - i am an enthusiast with some computer knowledge

I am looking to future proof for the next 4-5 years or so and have saved up while doing research over the last 3-4 months (not solid).

So rip it apart

P5Q3 Deluxe (wifi)
Q9450 Quad (maybe Q9650)
HD 4890 Graphics
Vista 64 Bit
700 w psu
6 Gb ram PC10600
Lian Li B 25 (blue circle)
Blue ray writer

etc

I have been pondering going down the i 7 route and also waiting for windows 7 (going round and round)

If i ponder any more i will never get it done and the car will break or something and i will have to use my savings (or even worse the misses will find it)

I will mainly be watching HD films on a Samsung HD200 20inch lcd and playing better games than by current 7 year system will allow, picture editing you know the usual stuff

suggestions welcome i have a grand to spend £

If you want to go down the crossfire route, two HD 4770s in tandem will out perform a 4890 in most cases (above 1920x1200, the 4890 would do better) - and it's a good amount cheaper.

If you're getting Windows 7, I'd suggest not spending the cash on Vista now. Get a hold of the RC copy of Windows 7 (out to the public today) and run that until it hits retail. I wouldn't worry too much about drivers but hey, it's a consideration.

If you want to spend a few more bucks, a Core i7 will certainly future proof that system a good amount.

I think you can actually get yourself a nice shiny i7 system with 1000£, not sure about how the retail price in UK compares to the ones in US (you can build an i7 system with ~$1000), though.

I think the maximum resolution for a 20" is 1680x1050, and with that I think two 4770 crossfired should be more than enough for you (and cheaper than a single 4890).

skip the blue ray writer.. Unless you really really really need it right now. its too pricey.
and get i7.. definitely worth it
