Would anyone like to voice an opinion as to which is the better service. It
seems like the total choice and the top 120 programing is similar. How
about cust svs., outages, frequent price hikes etc. I want to switch from
cable to sat. for all of the above reasons.Monthly Cable bill goes up,
quality and programing remains the same: Mediocre
How about Sirius over Music Choice, Does anyone have a preference?
It seems that dish offers a "Dual" tuner which can control 2 tv's for the
price of one. That saves me a lil cash so that is the sole reason I am
leaning towards Dish.
I'm sure this must be an old topic for you regs but being a newbie I am
totally clueless and I do appreciate your time and input.
Thanks for the opinions

They do? Do you mean the one that allows you to record one program while
yer watching another? (I've been out of the loop fer a while so...

It really does boil down to what you want to watch, as the two are
simular,but slightly different.
As an installer (retired) I would lean a bit more heavily to the Direct
TV side, as they seem to have a much simpler way of installing their
products without all the extrenal goofy switches and the like.

I've done a LOT of comparisons and DirecTV wins. Using each service's Top
120 (or Top 130) channels, DirecTV has 5 more relevant channels that Dish TV
doesn't: Fox Movie Channel, Oxygen, National Geographic, Outdoor Life, and
Hallmark channels. These are good, meaningful stations that Dish doesn't
offer. Dish offers a LOT more sports channels and Public Service channels
that overlap each other, and DirecTV has these too, though not so many.

Just to be clear it is a dual tuner not a recorder, one remote works on
infared the other on radio waves and the distance as I was told by a dish
rep was at least from a downstairs tv to an upstairs tuner.

I am just wondering if it's worth an extra $10 to $15 a month for those
extra channels. My first choice was directv, I just wish they offered a
dual tuner and I would have signed up already
Thank you for your opnion

One reason there is no agreement as to which is the better service is that
we all have different ideas about which are the "relevant channels."

Another is that no matter how hard we try to be fair, comparing DirecTV and
DISH involves comparig apples and oranges as they do not offer exactly the
same packages.

The question as to which is the better service is unanswerable unless two
little words are added: Which is the better service FOR ME?

Dish also offers a discount for paying for a years service in advance.
12 months for price of 11, been doing it for a couple of years.

I switched from Direct to Dish and got two Tuners
with recording capability on both for 'free' for the
same monthly price.

Dish has slightly better programming for me than
DirectTV (extra educational channels mostly and no
losses) but others say sports are better on Direct.

I get all the sports I need with basic packages so that
wasn't an issue for me but you might care.

Also note, that the "free" equipment really is free since
DirectTV charges even for replacing the stuff that breaks
and the monthy is right about the same.

> How about Sirius over Music Choice, Does anyone have a preference?

Not and issue for me.

They gave me that whole thing for free. With the PVRs.

The directtv stuff I had was one tuner, no PVR.

(Even with TiVo I love the Dish PVR -- we can
record 3 shows at one time -- four if we want to
show off by using the VCR and can find a blank
tape <grin> )

Dish service is as good or better than Direct.

I complained about a Remote (radio for second room)
and they SENT a technician with a new unit.

No mailing stuff in etc. And if it breaks -- it belongs to
DISH (not to me)

Everytime the DirectTV stuff broke they wanted more
money for a REFURB.

We get so used to it, we forget about the 'problems'
with DISH:

1) It needs to be explicitly rebooted or allowed to do that
on it's on each night -- doing this is fine for DISH but it
confuses and interferes with our separate TiVo -- not
and issue if you ONLY use the built-in PVR.

2) Reboots are slow, it always has to explicitly reaquire the
satellite signal (Direct just assumes the old settings are good
unless they are not.) 1-10 minutes usually, mostly 1-3

3) It occasionally "loses" the subtitles -- power reboot again
helps

4) Is also loses the "times" on the replay (showing millions of
minutes or some such) making it hard to fast forward/reverse
accurately (another power reboot.)

It has about the same quality guide a Direct.

I don't know if it is lower resolution. A friend has a DirectTivo. I
think his image is worse that I remember the image on my TV being. I
have cable now. If you use a PVR, your results will vary.
