looking for a gaming pc configuration ... what's the difference in the performance of AMD when compared to Pentium.

Depends on your budget really, if you're going on the cheap side go AMD. Otherwise Intel would be my choice.

A Phenom II generally better than a Pentium. Depends on model and of course your budget.
