In my experience, DirecTV's picture quality is very poor compared to the
anolog-only channels on local cable. The cable pic quality on the
"lower channels" is crystal clear, feeding the coax straight into the
TV. DirecTV's picture frequently resembles a very poorly compressed
budget DVD. The bigger and better the TV set, the worse DirecTV looks.
DirecTV It has improved slightly in this regard over the last couple
of years.
The cable quality advantage disappears with the "digital package". The
"upper channels", which are not available without the cable company's
digital box, are as bad or worse than DirecTV. Sometimes the screen
totally blacks out and the picure slowly "paints" back on, one little
block at a time. Even shows on premium channels such as HBO suffer very
much from this crazy pixely macroblock distraction in fast-moving scenes.
