Hi, I've got a
Intel Core 2 DUO E6750 @ 2.66GHz w/ 2 GB RAM
Antec Earthwatts 500
9800 GT 1GB

Also, in my box with the 9800 GT I did not get the PCI-E connector/converter, so i just directly plugged in a PCI-E from the power supply because it was available, is that okay?
Thanks

Nothing high end at the moment, I just recently got my card. But I was wandering if this set-up could so i could maybe start looking into getting some new games. I'm not sure, but i don't think i will be going SLi. Maybe after I get a job first ;)

If i wanted to future proof this set-up, what upgrades should i make (mainly towards the motherboard and PSU)?
On a $500AU limit.

Yes, i want to upgrade the motherboard to a QUAD Core and maybe a Earthwatts 750? SLi capable would be nice. Suggestions?

Get a 780i (which is what I have, and it works great) which can do 3xSLi with 3 PCI-e x16 slots.

It's better than the 680i since it has native support for 45nm CPUs, and not nearly as expensive as the 790i.

You can get a good used EVGA A-1 (with lifetime warranty I think) off of Amazon for 155, or a new regular version for a bit more online.

Then get a good quad (under or around $200) and OC it.

If you live near a microcenter, pick up a Q9400 for $180. Or you can get another quad and OC it.

What kind of a power supply is needed for that kind of set-up?
Could you maybe post some links? Would be much appreciated. I'm not very good with motherboards and CPUs

yep. For SLi of two 9800GTs, you can get a 650watt.

I'll pm you if you need more info

The setup you have now will play most games out now.
Call of Duty, F.E.A.R, Quake4, on high settings, on a 22W monitor no problem.
Maybe in the future look at the gtx260-285, and OC the processor a bit.
I think you should be fine for a while, save your $$ for now.
Buy a game, play it and see, before you drop cash on something you may not need. I use a 9800gt w/AMDX2 4200 OC to 2.5ghz plays games just fine.
I fold@home so I have a few computers.
My Q6600 @ 3ghz wGTX260, I cant see much difference playing those games.

Yes good point, I was playing an MMORPG though on high settings with my current set-up and after about 10 mins in the "Trading Area" the screen became distorted and the computer restarted. Any ideas?

I would start with the newest drivers from Nvidia, remove old and install new.
If not done already.
Make sure the game is patched with the newest patches.
Keep am eye on temps on cpu and gpu. Run a utility to test them.
Run memtest to make sure memory is good.
Make sure the heat sinks are dust free.
Make sure you have good case ventilation.
Fans blowing in and out.
