Pentium 4 2.4 512k cache fsb533 on a P4PE motherboard with a 350 Watt power supply.
I presently have 1 Gigabyte of DDR333 RAM installed, running XP Professional Service pack 3.
I have had this thing running for many years with no problems (since 2002). But, as time moves on the machine is showing signs of its age by being relatively slow for this day and age.
Luckily though (I think), I came across another discarded computer with a Pentium 4 3.2 MHz (Supports Hyper threading) 512k cache FSB800 with 512 Megs of DDR400 in it .
Now I have read through several groups, and have found that this 3.2 P4 should work if I swap both the memory out (DDR400 512M), and the processor from the old machine, and put them into this existing P4PE motherboard (which also supports HT)! My p4 2.4 right now does not. The motherboard will technically be over clocked for speeds it IS rated for (processor, and memory).
Now I have done the swap, and have never managed to get the new set up to boot up more than once or twice. The motherboard immediately recognized the new processor, and memory, but keeps failing to boot after the initial settings were set in the bios. On the odd occasion it will boot.
One time XP Professional did make it through the boot sequence, I checked the system info, which told me the system had a Pentium 3.2 running at 3.06 GHz with 512 Megs of Ram. Then Windows automatically installed software for the new discovered hardware and prompted a reboot. At that point the boot sequence would never be successful again, until I swapped back the old p4 2.4 processor and sink, and the 1 Gig of original DDR333 into their places. That is what I am running right now.
Is it possible there is some kind of a setting that I am missing in the bios? I would think there must be, but I need another opinion on this before I blow something up!
Thank you.
