Hello,

I decided after many suggestions to learn how to build a computer. I've been looking at videos and reading articles. I think I've covered the basics. I'm planning to build on the LGA775 platform. I've been hearing its getting outdated but I usually don't upgrade that often, and a computer like this should be enough for what I do. Here is the parts list I'm looking to build with. Any comments or suggestions are welcome! :p

For the CPU, I was wondering whats difference between this & the Intel Core i7 920, except for the differenct socket type?

The i7 920 would be much faster of course, and that would be the main difference. Other differences... the i7 has an onboard memory controller and uses DDR3 in sets of 3.

You should never buy 4 sticks of RAM when two will do.

The 620HX is a fine PSU, but there are certainly less expensive options that would work as well.

The Q8400 doesn't really have much going for it. Slower than the Q9400, which in turn is slower than an AMD 940.

So, use the faster CPU:

AMD x4 940
Reasoning as above.
ASUS M4A78T-E AM3 DDR3
DDR3 is now the same price as DDR2. Using an AM3 board will provide more longevity, should you get the urge to upgrade the RAM or CPU in the future.
G.Skill DDR3 1333 4GB
