Well I'll be doing a huge system upgrade in the next few months, and I was looking at the 4890s. Well my monitor resolution is 1680 x 1050. I use design software, autocad, watch movies and game. I saw the review of the 4890 crossfire - but is it worth it for my monitor resolution?

Definitely not. One 4890 will be more than enough for you. Actually, if you are planning on buying a xfire capable motherboard anyway, getting 2 4770's in crossfire would be a better buy for you. They perform better than a 4890 while consuming less power and cost less as well.

Thanks for your answer, and also a question, out of curiosity, does quad crossfire mean that you can stick 4 cards inside or 2 x2 cards? Also can you put 3 ati cards in a motherboard? (I'm asking because I will see 3-Way SLI and quad crossfire technology on motherboards)

Quadfire means 4 ati gpu's, it doesn't matter how you do it as long as there are 4 GPU's you have quadfire. however quadfire motherboards are quite expensive(minus the K9A2 platinum and asrock x58 board) and are not very cost effective as 3200 cores don't scale very well.
