Hey guys i'm building a game for primarily gaming, i play mainly the call of duty series. Iv been just searching around trying to do a bit of research in to which parts would be best and why and so on..
I had been thinking of getting a Intel Q9550 but then the guys that i play with seem to think to go the Amd route. I was comparing them and was wondering what would be a good amd alternative. I was suggested to check out the Amd Phenom II X4 940. I cant seem to find this on the cpu charts.. I know the 9550 is probably better than the 940 but its nearly 50€ more
Here are the two:
Amd 940 http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/22527 [...] hz-6m.html Intel Q9550: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=344757
You will not see much of a difference here, the intel is better for more cpu oriented tasks but the performance advantage has little impact in gaming and none that you will really see, the 940 BE is good because it is a cheaper over all platform since it is am2+, you will save a lot of money that you can use to get what really matters in gaming, the graphics card, and still rip the benefits of a quad core cpu for great multi tasking, and like someone said before me, Black Edition phenom ll's make awesome overclockers since its so easy with an unlocked multiplier, for gaming right now AMD is the way to go but the intel platform is still good if you are an intel fan and dont mind spending money needlessly but you should make sure your graphics card is up to par that is what counts the most.
Yeah i think the black edition is what i had in mind sorry i didn't mention that.. I currently using a Ati 4850 512mb and a Corsair 650w psu which i was planing on using for the new build. I know i could go better with the Graphics card but i though i could use it for now because its not even that old and then could upgrade if i needed to in the future. I also bought a samsung t220hd so il be happy to use that for my display. So i got around 500€ to spend on the other parts
Heres what a guy suggested for a machine for me. i still am looking in to different cases so never mind the top two things. Id liek you to take a look if you dont mind and see what you think

that corsair should be good enough, go to xtremepsucalculator.com and put in ur specs and u will find out how much power u need but with 650 watts you should ready to go, maybe excess
Those specs also look very good so u should be good to go
Hey again i was just reading a guide on here and learned about chipsets .. Should i go for the 790Gx with the intergrated graphics or just the 790G..Im not sure whats the norm when building a gaming pc
Damn the more i read the more i get worried. I though putting the parts together was going to be the hard part.. im finding picking the parts i need is really hard and how to know if everything is compatible with each other.. im starting to get scared..ram timings, hard drive types/speeds, Am3 mobo or Am2+ that accept that accept ddr2 and not ddr3 ram.. (i think thats it)chipset types, ram speeds think im in over my head

What should i try and do to get everything sorted
Lol trust me i went through the same thing myself when i started building....don't worry too much everything you buy will be old news within a week after u have bought them this is the world of technology...i would not worry much about chip sets especially since you have graphics card so you do not really need integrated graphics, the 4850 is a very good card but it really depends on the resolution you are playing at, if you are not going beyond 1680x1050 then you need nothing more otherwise if you are playing at a resolution like 1920x1200 or more an upgrade is not a bad idea but regardless you are in no rush your build looks good as it is don't worry too much lol
here are some things you should know:
An AM 3 mobo cannot accept ddr 2 ram it only takes ddr 3.
An AM2+ mobo cannot go beyond DDR 2 ram it does not take DDR 3
The 940 is an AM2+ chip and thus you are not going to be able to use DDR 3 ram with it,only DDR 2
If you intend on using ddr 3 or am 3 then you are going to need a different cpu like the phenom ll x3 730 BE or the 955 BE or the 965 BE (these are all black editions that i mentioned) these are all AM3 chips that will work with ddr 3. The 940 BE is NOT am3 it is AM2+ only and thus only takes ddr 2 if you plan on buying the 940 remember that.

ok well i think il just use ddr2 ram screw ddr3 Im just wondering about hards drives now and a dvd drive..are they compatabile with all machines?
Here is the one i put together on the site i intend to buy from..will everything be ok is there anything that could be better for the same price that i missed?
The AMD quads are very good in COD4 and they are much smoother in gameplay than the intel 775 cpu's. I gained 50% in frame rate on a 24"screen when I switched from an intel E6850 dual core to the AMD. Also It doesn't matter which Phenom II processor you get because the HD4850 is the weak link. I have a HD 4850 and two 8800gt's and it doesn't matter if the cpu is clocked at 1.8gig or 3.6gig the framerate is the same. At 3gig the cpu usage is only 30% so there is no point overclocking. If you already have DDR2 memory then get a DDR2 motherboard. If your buying new memory then get an AM3 board and cpu.
I know I keep saying this throughout threads but what about a e5200 with a gigabyte s2l mobo. That is a total of about 120 for just the cpu and mobo. Overclock it and it can't be touched for the price.
