Hello, I am fairly new to video cards and I'm hoping you guys can share your vast experience with me. ;)

Anyways, I have a XFX HD-487A-CDF9 Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB and its seriously overheating when gaming and I need to find a cooler for it so I can play Fallout 3 for more than 10 min at time...

I've been waiting for the Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME 4870X2 VGA Cooler for months now and they are finally available for pre-order.

I'm in a rush so I was wanting to know if I should wait for the AC 4870 X2 (arrives June 2nd) or get something like the Thermalright T-Rad2 instead which is readily available.

Thanks!

Is the T-Rad2 even compatible with the 4870X2?

By the way, have you tried to manually up the fan speeds on your card?

Maybe he wants his computer to be cool and silent :)

I'm not positive the T-Rad2 is compatible now that you mention it. I see its compatible with the 4870 but there is no mention of 4870 X2....

Thank you for the fan speed article! That is so cool. That should hopefully keep it cool enough until I can get ahold of a new cooler.

I just wanted to follow up and say how awesome the Arctic Cooling Accelero XTREME 4870X2 is! I've had it installed for a few days and its very quiet and dropped my temps down a lot!

Here are my temps while gaming:

Accelero hd4870x2 60% fan speed (Dead silent).
Core 1: 46c core2: 44c

Damn! That is nice. I don't think that there are many aftermarket coolers out for the 4870X2 so it's nice to hear that this one is good.

I just got mine and I can't get the screws in for the X braces on the back side. I have a VisionTek card, did you have any trouble at all with that part of the assembly?

That part of the install is, by far, the worst thing I have ever had to do concerning computers. They really should include much longer screws. All I can say is start with one corner, put it in, but not all the way. Then, do the opposite corner going diagnal. Push down as hard as you can, I actually used a screwdriver which is quite dangerous to the card if it slips, but I got it to work OK. Once you have those two screws in tighten them down as far as you can, then repeat with the other 2 corners, good luck! This part of the install took me hours. :fou:

I have an Asus 4870 x 2 that came stock with the tri fan set up. I just tried to install the AC cooler only to find out that I could not use the heatsinks and there were no screws to tighten the X braces back down. You cannot use the original ones as suggested as they would not tighten enough to hold anything in place, hitting shoulder of screw before any tightening was aquired. I tried to use the factory fan to board srews but how far can you tighten these as there is no shoulder to stop you from tightening too much. Any more help out there? Many Thanks!

Guys, did anyone try this cooler on a setup with TWO 4870x2? How do the fans cool the card, when there is so little space in-between the cards? In the info for this cooler it says it supports crossfire.

July 1, 2009 5:01:22 AM

Well it DOES support crossfire, for example I am using a 4870X2 with this cooler, and a 48701Gb with an aftermarket two slot cooler. So it is possible, however this cooler is really more like 3 slots thick, so unless your mobo spaces the pci-e slots alot ALOT like my P5e does, then it may not actually be compatible.

And by the way this cooler does a great job, reduced my idle temps from 80+ to 49 and my load from 95+ to 75 maximum. It does however increase other components a few degrees C

I have a Sapphire 4870x2. After nearly tearing the skin off of my fingers, throwing the screwdriver and stripping a bunch of screws I figured out a quick and simple fix. The screws are simply not long enough. However there are plenty of long ones of the same diameter which hold together the old fan mechanism that was removed to place arctic cooler. Look around the periphery of the old fan. There are a bunch of screws remove 8 of them. Take the tiny screws off of the cross bars and save the springs. Next place the larger screw through the cross bars, and replace the springs. Next screw into place without the urge to KILL whomever decided not to include longer screws in the kit!

I just got the VisionTek 4870 X2 and after one night of running it decided to start looking for more cooling options for it. After finding out about the Arctic Cooling solution and reading the reviews here and the disappointment with the screws I found this on the Arctic Cooling site for the Accelero XTreme 4870X2;

Quote:
We noticed that the original screws are not long enough to mount the X-plate when installing the Accelero XTREME 4870X2.

To solve the problem, we recommend replacing the original ones with eight regular 8mm M2 counter sink screws which are long enough for re-installing the X-plates with the cooler.

Please send us your address to freezer@arctic-cooling.com and we will send you eight pieces of these M2 screws free of charge. Alternatively, you could buy the screws in the market as it is a standard M2x8 counter sink screw.

The screws will be sent from Hong Kong by normal airmail and will take about 14 days for delivery

Hope that helps.

I also have a Vision Tek 4870X2 and have the same problem..Mine runs so hot that it crashes the PC on very demanding games like Crysis. But on games like UT2004 runs about 84c.

I got my Accelero Xtreme 4970X2 in the mail this morning and installed it. It didn't come with the longer screws like I'd hoped but I did remember that I saw a post where you could use the screws out of the OEM fan shroud and they worked like a charm.
Anyway I ran 3DMark06 in a loop for an hour and my GPU never got over 57c!!! before I was getting 93c!!! Oh and it is Sooo Quiet I can't even hear it run :)  Very happy with it and now I can play Crisis again.

I too had the same issue with the X bracket screws. Being to lazy to go to the hardware store, and to impatient to wait for longer screws to be shipped, I had my own solution.

I removed the 4 Black plastic lugs from each arm of the X bracket, left center lug intact, and springs on screws intact (To keep the brackets spaced from the board).

Worked a treat, no waiting, no walking / driving to get more parts!

Just installed one myself. I'm getting 36/38 C on idle and 50 under load which is a 40 C improvement on the stock cooler.

The X-bracket made me want to cry, I ended up brute forcing it down and getting them to screw in. Definitely do not recommend that method but it worked :)

Hey all,

The Arctic Accelero Extreme cooler is the best!!! I bought mine 2 weeks ago. I however checked on the coolers website before I purchased, and they said there that the screws are too short for the X plates. They will even ship you the new M2 screws for free.

Before on my MSI-4870x2-OC edition, It used to idle on 47 degrees C and undel load the temps would go up to 81 degrees. With the new Arctic Accelero Extreme, my idle temp dropped to 29 degrees and under load the temp will not go higher than 44 degrees...so I'm a happy puppy!!!

I've been on a few forums and I see that most people do not get these low temp that I get. Please note that your case also plays a big part in the cooling process. I have the Coolermaster Cosmos S, which is HUGE and have a lot of airflow.

I would really recommend this cooler to anyone owning a 4870x2.
