It happens occasionally that my mom calls me and yells at me on the phone "There's no sound on the Skype!" or asks me about something that is virtually impossible for me to explain to her over the phone.

Since we both have internet connections where mine is fast (100mbit) but hers is only (4mbit on the countryside) it would be possible for me to hook up to her computer and see what's wrong with it. The problem is however, that when using rdesktop it will log her out of the computer and what I want to do is to merely hook up to her screen and keyboard/mouse without logging her out or interfering with any of her applications in any way whatsoever. Is that possible using rdesktop?

She's using Vista Home and I'm using XP x64. I know that you cannot rdp from an XP Home machine but I'm not sure what applies to the Vista editions or whether you can rdp to machines running XP or Vista Home edition.

Perhaps VNC might do but I fear that it requires more bandwidth which would make the session very laggy and sluggish. Any suggestions?

I think you used to be able to take control of remote PC using NetMeeting, but I think it was dropped from Vista. I don't know if a stand-alone installer can be found now.

You can also try to use Windows Remote Assistance.

You could also give LogMeIn a try, I know a few people using it and they seem to like it.

Hi,

There is one site teamviewer.com which provides you with all the solutions for remote access.

As this an application that connects to your desktop all around the world.

Thanks!! :)

I have the same problem (with my mother - but different problem). I have found that the best way is to have your mother send an invitation for remote assistance to you. Then get her on the phone and have her watch her computer screen as you fix her problem remotely. You can tell her what you are doing and why over the phone.
