I need to do a complete upgrade as I'm running on a 5-6 year old system here. Now knowing that USB3, DX11 and Sata 3 are around the corner, but not knowing by how much, is it worth putting off this major upgrade to wait for those standards to become implemented or just go ahead and pick up a new i7 build?

By the time USB3, DX11 and Sata 3 are widely available, newer technologies will be around the corner. It might be worth waiting for them.

^ yeah but that will be 2010/11 when they are widely available.

don't forget that BIOS's may start to include booting from PCIe devices soon since it's so much faster than SATA so you could get away with buying an i5 build in august and then buying a USB3 PCI card later and SATA 3 works with sata 2 input ports.

Also DX11 is very similar to DX10.1 so current ATi cards may support it.

Since you can't use a DX10 card to run DX10.1, you certainly won't be able to jump from 10.1 to 11 without getting a new video card. If you wait for the next technology to upgrade, then you'll never do it. The same applies to cars, etc.
