I am about to order the components for my first build and was hoping someone out there would be kind enough to give me some input. I would be using it for light gaming, multimedia and lots of photoshop projects. The list is as follows:

Case: Antec Three Hundred

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-M720-US3 - motherboard - ATX - nForce 720D MCP

CPU: Black Edition AMD Phenom X4 9950 / 2.6 GHz processor

PSU: SWEEX Power Supply 650 Watt Low Noise - power supply - 650 Watt

RAM: PNY 2GB DDR2 PC5300 x 2 = 4GB total

HD: SEAGATE HD Int Cuda 7200.12 3,5 500GB/SATA/16MB

Optical Drive: LITEON LiteOn 22x Int. DVDRW SATA

Graphics: XFX 9600GSO 1.5GB PCI-Express

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated

You obviously have a budget , and I think that shows in some of your choices .

Can you tell us what your budget is and perhaps we can suggest better options .

1) drop that mobo for a 780G motherboard

2) drop the 9950 for a 720 BE because even in quad threaded apps the 720 wins

3) switch that psu for a corsair 400cx or a silverstone 300w nightjar if you have it in you budget.

4) switch the gfx card for a 4770, performs better and costs the same-ish.

Helloworlds build is better with newer faster components ... but does it fit the budget?

The ram is also pretty slow . It would be nice to get pc 6400 in there too

Sorry this is my first post and i only just saw the how to post template. I'm looking at spending no more than £450 ex vat or less preferably. I forgot to mention in the original post that I am restricted to using misco.co.uk which is kind of a pain but they have a fairly good selection. Also i intend to dual boot ubuntu 64 and vista 64.

Cheers

I have to go to work now , but have a look at the components Helloworld suggested and see how they compare for price with your original selections .

The misco site is a bit different to what Im used to . I have put together a build using AMD'd latest triple core processor on an AM2+ platform . This is a fair bit more powerful than the first generation Phenom quad you picked out .

Cheers for the input after doing some reading I decided to go for the components you suggested
Phenom II seems to be good value for the price. Was unsure about using radeon gfx cards as i have had trouble getting linux drivers to work before but the 4770 had good reviews from other ubuntu users. Only one question really, Will the psu be able to handle 4 HDs as i wouldn't mind clearing some desk space by putting my external storage drives in the tower? Either way the order has been made So many thanks to both outlander and helloworld for your suggestions I will post once the build is complete, hopefully things wont go horribly wrong.
