OK so i'm replacing the motherboard on an HP computer and the power connector for the front panel of the case is all bundled into one connector. It looks exactly like a USB connector, but its black instead of blue.
The motherboard I'm installing now uses a q connector so I'm not sure what I can do. Is there a converter that can be purchased or is there something else that I can do?
also the cable that looks exactly like a USB cable has a slightly different pin configuration. There is 5 pins on the top and 4 on the bottom whereas USB is the opposite
This is the most common way to provide connections to the front panel- in one 10-pin connector. Many cases use this by putting a 10-pin female connector on the cable that feeds the front panel, and your only concern might be to check that its pin lazyout matches what the mobo pins do. Do you have a manual on your old mobo that gives you those details? If not, look very closely at the mobo pinout and see if there are labels next to it that tell you the pinout of the old mobo. If it matches what the new one does, then obviously the 10-pin connector on the cable end is OK.
The other option is that each use has its own separate cable with a connector, made so that all the connectors can fit on at once. So, in that system, there's one cable with a 2-pin connector for the front power switch and you plug that onto pins 6 and 8; there's a similar cable for the Reset switch and it goes on pins 5 and 7; and so on. NOTE that those switches are just momentary contacts and have no polarity, so which way they are plugged in does not matter. HOWEVER, that is not so for the power LED and HDD LED - they do have to be put in the right way. But don't panic. Worst case for those is you plug them in backwards and they do not ever light up. If that happens, just turn the connector the other way.
