Dont know if its right way of asking, sorry if iam breaking any rules .
I am trying to build a PC at home, mainly for gaming and bit of web browsing ofcourse, been confused for days between Phenom and Core2Quad CPU but here is what intrests me more so far. all parts from www.microdirect.co.uk, if u can make any changes to make it better or make me similar configuration in phenom i dont mind. pls add if iam missing any necessary parts, with this obviously i will buy a gaming mouse n keyboard and a 24" monitor so thats about £250 on top i guess.
Wizard case WI20AL + 600W PSU(S022460) £39.13
LG 22x DVD±RW with Lightscribe technology.Full retail kit includes dvd burning software GH22LS30 AUAU LS Black Bare SATA with Software(S022993) £20.00
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 95W Energy Efficient 2.4GHz SLACR G0 Stepping (3yr Manufacturer's Warranty)(CPUIP4775Q660EE) £138.99
Gainward 9500 GT 1GB 471846200-9795 PCI-E Graphics Video Card DVI HDMI(S023268) £42.78
Seagate 500GB hard disk drive Barracuda SATA II 300 7200rpm 16MB cache oem with manufacturer's 5yr warranty(S023110) £37.99
If you are mainly gaming then this would be better - 4 cores are a waste really unless you use professional multi-threaded apps like final cut pro, scientific programs or are big time into programing things like graphics. Then a 4 core cpu will save you lots of time, but if you just web browse and use the pc for casual office or even a bit heavier applications like SPSS, photoshop etc. at the same time you are listening to itunes - you don't really need to have a 4 core cpu. It may be nice, but it is a luxury really, I should know cause I do all that stuff on a dual core 2.16 Ghz mobile processor. Gaming is likely to be the most performance intensive programming you will run, and games like GPU's. There it is better to get a good GPU for gaming - you will notice a huge difference. Also you can OC this cpu up to 4.0 Ghz, so you should be pretty good with that - it is much faster in games than the Q6600 - which is outdated now anyways - if you have to go quad go with the newer 45nm processors.
Much better not to cheap on the case or the PSU as well - read Proximon's guide for reasons why.
I would check both ebuyer and scan to find the cheapest parts, this is just a suggestion build but it beats the above Q6600 build in any game. Technically on a 24 inch you would want to get a P45 board with 2 x PCI Express 2.0 slots, a 550W PSU and go for 2 x 4770's in CF if you can afford the extra £100 that will cost you - no game will beat that really if you OC the wolfdale.
Hope this was better
