Pictures attach themselves to folders at random

Hi all,

I have a very annoying problem. Pictures or photos I have seem to randomly attach themselves to folders. E.g. I created a folder called 'work'
instantly a picture of an album cover attached itself to it. This happens all the time if I have say 300 folders all of them have random pictures attached to them. How can I stop this happening?? Why is it happening?
