I'm looking to set up regular system backup of my 750GB hard drive (windows 7) onto an external HDD. FOr this purpose I've purchased a 2TB eHDD which I'd like to partition (one partition to back up the 750GB, one as additional storage or to back up other computers running XP). From what I've read the partition on which the system will be backed up needs to be larger that the original hard drive. Does this mean I should partition the 2TB eHDD into 2x1TB partitions? I was planning on using the Windows 7 System Image to perform the regular backups.

am i on the right track?

It depends on the software. Some will keep the old backup file and create a new one when you do a new backup. You also have the option of overriding the previous backup.

Backup files are usually less than your source drive size. If you keep all the backups(done at different stage) than it is possible to use up all 2TB.
