I just finished putting together my new pc. I am using the ZALMAN CNPS9700 cpu fan with the GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P mobo. The fan has a 3 pin connector but the mobo has a 4 pin connector... but that's not really a problem right? When I turn on the pc the pc fan does not spin, however when I turn the pc off the fan seems to get a "jolt" of power and it does about 2 rotations (the LED lights up too). Should the fan start up instantly or does it take a while? I don't want to leave my pc turned on thinking it just takes a while for the fan to come on and then realize I just fried my cpu.

Assuming everything else works, you can get a zalman "fan mate" rpm adjuster and set the fan rotation manually. Or simply get a 4 pin fan. If your system isn't powering up, then I would remove the motherboard and test it on a non conductive surface.

The fan came with the controller and I tried turning the knob in both directions but it didn't work. Everything else runs fine so I don't think it's the mobo.

My CPU fan on my old DFI board did that, it would not spin for about a minute. Then it would come on slowly. It is just the way the fan control was set in the BIOS. You could set it to do about whatever you wanted.
If you bought a fan with a seperate speed control, you need to plug the CPU fan into another place, or go into the BIOS and set the one you are plugged into to full "on" all the time.
However, I thought the speed control in the BIOS worked perfectly fine.

I got it working now... I did what you said. I plugged the controller into a sys_fan slot connector instead of the of the cpu_fan connector. I plan on putting in a 4-fan control panel in the front of the case soon so this is just a temporary fix anyway. Thanks guys.
