I am upgrading my old desktop PC for gaming after having used my Laptop for the last couple of years. MY budget is 150 pounds. I have a hard disk, case, PSU and DvD drive so I am looking to upgrade the Motherboard , CPU and RAM. I will also upgrade my GPU at a later stage but I simply do not have the money. I have no preference for AMD or Intel, however I would like to do some mild overclocking to get the best bang for buck.

I have thought about something like this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158689

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146049

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141550

The idea would be to OC the processor quite a bit. The other option would be to wait a bit longer and get an Athlon 7750 BE and a Biostar TA790GX so I have the option of Xfire later.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

your second option would be the best bet, but save the money on the aftermarket cooler until you can buy an akasa nero 967 or Titan Fenrir since those are cheap and at the top of the cooler scale.

+1 for waiting

Save more money. You can get some pretty amazing stuff these days for 250 pounds (X3 720 Black Edition + GA-MA790X-UD4P + 4GB of DDR2). 150 pounds on the other hand will give you some really disappointing junk. Sorry... The good news is that hardware will get cheaper in time too, while you save.

grab the 7750be i used it in my gaming rig and it runs like a champ.

I don't see where ppl are having so much trouble getting high oc's
i slapped mine in a m4a78 pro with 8 gigs of ram oc'ed to 3.5 stable with only minor voltage bumps, all on the stock heat sink no less.
