I have a brand new cpu and heatsink (still wrapped). Do they need special cleaning before being put together?

Just be sure to keep the mating surfaces clean (ie, don't put your fingers on them) until you apply the thermal paste and assemble everything.

No, but I always clean them anyway ^_^.
