Hi Guys, I have 8800GTS 512mb in Sli. They use to run at 55C and like 63C max - 65C max. And Now they are getting really really hot, and I mean at 100% fan speeds. When I play Left 4 Dead, My top card will hit 86C and my 2nd card will hit lets say 74C. Why is it so much of a change? I just cleaned my case out completly - Coolermaster 690. And When They Idle its like 63-65C. Before when I first got em they would idle at 53C or less. You guys have any idea what is going on here?
When you run an electric motor weather its been at 100% since you got the card or 50% its going to wear and tear....rpms will lower and the fan will eventually die...find a new fan to wire in there thats the exact same such as voltage requierments etc....or find a new cooler that comes with a fan...really its process of elimination....you should also look into adding some new heatsink grease...
idk how long ago you got those cards but if they are pretty old then i suggest checking for lint on the heat sinks of those cards. my 8800gt was hitting 98C. I took my 8800 apart and found lint all over the heat sink and fan. I then re-applied arctic silver 5 and...
back to 55C(idle) 68C(load).
but then again i dont know about the 8800GTS layout.
dont forget cotton swabs, isopro-somethin' alcohol, grounding the card to avoid electrostatic shock etc...
I would hope if you HAVE to actually clean your case out and you leave it somewhere where you actually need to do that then you would have enough since to clean the cards out as well....im not holding my breath

Lol, I didn't even understand what rewindlabs is saying.
Here's how I interpret it: 'I would hope that if you actually had to clean out your case and you left it somewhere so dusty that it actually required you to do that, then you would have enough sense to clean the cards as well... I'm not trying to commit suicide.'
@ JLewis187: Sometimes just blowing the card out is not enough, some types of airborne contaminant will stick to metal when heated and have to be removed with a stiff brush (a toothbrush is perfect).
I suggest you remove both cards and take them apart to fully clean the heatsink fins and fan blades.
As a general rule, there are 4 screws or nuts on the side opposite the fan in a 'X' pattern, these hold the cooler to the actual graphics chip and should not be removed unless you intend to replace the thermal grease.

buy new VGA cooler warrenty would be void if you take the thing apart anyways.. and it may offer better cooling than stock, easy to fit also just rember to clean all the tim off and apply new tim

On my card there is alot of different screws that seem like they need to be tightened to a certain .... whats the word im looken for... torque.. Is that true, or do i just go in there unscrew everything i see take it apart and hook it back up?
Before you start undoing screws a word of caution: use a good quality screwdriver that fits well and be very careful no to let it slip. And yes, the correct term is torque but as long as you do not have forearms like Popeye it is unlikely you will overtighten them.
You will also need: A tube of new thermal grease, some paper towels, some pure alcohol or cleaning fluid and a box to hold those tiny, tiny, easily lost screws.
They usually come apart easily enough but start from the fan side, there may be screws under the heatsink cover. Take off the (usually) 4 screws on the back last, these actually hold the heatsink to the GPU core itself and should be tightened carefully a turn or so at a time diagonally, when you come to reassemble.
The old thermal grease on the GPU die and heatsink should be removed using the paper towels, moistened with alcohol, do not lose the small thermal pads that are on the memory chips.
Apply a small amount of thermal grease to the GPU die, a thin, even film is plenty, and put a small drop onto each memory chip as well.

Thanks so much for the advice guys, when i opened it up it was suchhh a sinch, I did the whole job in about 30mins was easy as hell. Now at 100% im idling at ... well 45 so far and it could probley get a lil lower. the other card at 45. Again I cant belive how easy it was I recommend everyone to do this.
That's one of the plus points with the Zalman VF900 coolers I'm using, the open design makes cleaning them a cinch, hope your temps stay nice and low mate.
