New Hard Drive Advice

Hello, I'm looking for advice on upgrading my hard drive. I currently have WD 7200 rpm hard drive. Debating if I should add a SSD for windows files and games and keep the HDD for storage or if I should upgrade to 2 HDD in Raid 0, maybe the 1T Spinpoints.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. Leaning towards adding a SSD to boot from, Crucial C300 64gb at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6471999&Sku=C19-8023

The other option I was looking at is dual Velociraptor drives http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4177125&Sku=TSD-300HLFS

But cost would be quite a bit more.

How will these two options compare, RAID 0 Velociraptors or 500gb WD caviar blue and the Crucial SSD drive.
  2. I've never used it, but I've always heard raid 0 referred to as deathwish raid, if that means anything :)

Any decent SSD will be MUCH faster than any HDD or RAID0 array. (Well, that assumes that you connect by SATA 3.0 or 6.0 Gb/s ports, and not by the earliest SATA (1.5 Gb/s) system.) Cost per GB is higher for the SSD, but if you want speed that's the way to go.

What elel is talking about is a well-known caution on RAID0 systems. They are TWICE as likely to fail as a single HDD because BOTH drives in the RAID0 array MUST be error-free. If ONE of the drives fails, you lose ALL the data on the entire array. RAID0 users NEED to get religious about backups!
