Windoes xp not intalling drivers

I have a HP pavilion a 220 and I can not get connected to internet through ether net. I have tried to install driver and it fails. I even bought a net gear adapter and same thing will not install driver . The only think showing in network folder is 1394 adapter. I can't even get LAN to show.

Quite frequently, your anti virus or firewall must be turned off to install HP drivers.
After installing them, turn the security back on.
Drivers downloaded from the HP website may not work, and you may have to get the drivers on a disk from HP.
