The only two questionable parts are the RAM and MOTHERBOARD. As for ram, someone has pointed out that the one I have there isn't too good. What should I go for? and what's good about tri memory? (2x2x2).
Also, as for the motherboard, is that overkill? I am getting a HD5870 and will probably not do any crossfire or dual gpu (not a hardcore gamer).
Most importantly, how does this pc look overall for my main computer for school, heavy photography (lightroom/ps), and some gaming (MW2, Starcraft 2 later, etc.)
i dont know who said the memory you bought isnt the greatest...corsair makes the best in my opinion...although the packaging is annoying..but what you have is certainly quality stuff in my book, and quite the build as well. Dont worry about overkill, your trying to get 5-8 years out of this computer anyway, with what you put into it.
I have a 600 power supply and i have on board video, 4 hard drives(2 in raid 0) and no videocards. So i can add later and use the extra watts, that i7 is going to do more than enough with games just by itself, most games are using strengths of the processor sometimes, and not maxing the use of these 2 gig $500 cards. Just one 5870 with out CF will accommodate you preettttyy wellll.
In general, I am having a tough time deciding on what kind of computer my next one should be. At first, i was considering Macbook Pro (had one before), a Vaio laptop but I already have a "descent" (not great at all) 13inch laptop so with the same price (or even lower), I could get an awesome desktop.
But the big question is, how much of a boost in performance will I feel with this super desktop against a what these days call "fast" Macbook pro, vaio Z etc.? Are all these quality parts going to pay off and really give me the EXTRA satisfaction? Or should are specs on laptops good enough and should I go for the mobility. I am by no means a hardcore gamer but I do and will play some games as well. Also, my main work will be photography (lr/ps), University (heavy multitasking).
