Old dell web server had its HDD crash, considering just getting a new box for it. As its just a web server will there be a benefit of getting a xeon or opteron over a core2 or phenom II/athlon II and would it be worth the extra cost?

Personally I would say there is no need for an actual server cpu for such a light task.

I bought a Xeon W3520 instead of a Core i7 920 because, although the two chips are identical in most respects, the Xeon supports ECC memory. If that's important to you, go with the Xeon.
