Newbie Overclocking info+help , thanks

Hi there,

Oc is something new to me and I have some simple questions to you experts.
Intel Pentium 4 2.8Gzh
Motherboard: Msi MS-6585
RAM: 1x516mb PC2700 166.6Mhz(333mhz)+ 1x1024mb PC2700 166.6Mhz(333Mhz).

FACTORY SETTINGS

CPU clock: 200mhz
Clock Multiplier: 14
CPU Speed: 2.8Ghz

CPU/DRAM Ratio: 6:5
DRAM Speed: 166.6mhz FSB Rating: 333mhz

After OC

So I raised the cpu clock to 215mhz and got a Speed of 3.01Ghz
The ratio remained the same at 6:5 but the DRAM speed got up to 180mhz!
If I change the ratio to 4:3 They will boost from 180mhz to 286mhz!

BUT THE QUESTION IS, CAN IT GO THAT HIGH??? WHAT ARE THE LIMITS? And I am asking both for my CPU + DRAM. I don't want to raise the clock speed over 3.2Ghz since I don't want to buy a new cooler nor power supply.

PLEASE HELP, thanks!

  1. yeah That is not crazy high. You will be fine. I use to push my p4 to 3.8

So if I get the clock speed at 230mhz which means 3.2Ghz CPU Speed

and the DRAM at a 306 Speed with FSB Rating: 612
    (Originaly was 166.6(333mhz))

Won't this be a problem at all?

    Thanks for the reply :)
  3. No it should not be a problem.

    1 major problem occured..

I got the CPU clock at 230mhz and the ratio at 4:5
DRAM Speed: 276 and FSB Rating: 572

PROBLEM is that the PC did not boot up so I had to do the motherboard jumper thing.

Why did this happen? Not enough POWER? Or did the DRAM go way up high?
Are there any limits for the DRAM?

    Thanks
  5. I don't understand why you are messing with your ram. I never did I just up the clock speed a little at a time until it would not boot. There are limits on your ram. I was running my ddr2 800 at 920.

OK So I should leave the ratio and just raise the cpu clock speed. Should I raise the Vcore a bit too?
  7. Thanks for the great help! I raised the speed to 222Mhz so it's at 3.1Ghz right now tested with PRIME95.
    I have another question, right now I got 2gb PC3200 400mhz (2x1GB) + 1gb PC2700 333Mhz.

My motherboard supports up to 2x1GB PC3200 ram OR 3x1GB PC2700.
I have had problems before like when I put 1GB PC2700 + 2x512Mb PC2700 IT CAN NOT READ THEM ALL.
The problem is that when I put the 2x1GB PC3200 it reads only 1024Mb no matter the slots I put the cards in.
    When I put 1GB PC3200 + 1Gb PC2700 it reads 1536Mb.
    BUT when I put them ALL IN 2x1GB PC3200 + 1GB PC2700 it reads 2048Mb.

What is going on? Have you heared anything like this before?
