My cheapo EPOX board died so my old Opteron 165 rig needs a replacement…I am inclined on an Intel X58 (i7 920) since I want this new system to last for 3-5 years.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: As soon as possible

BUDGET RANGE: Bang For the buck (but less than $800)

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: HD Video editing, photo editing, gaming, office suites, CAD

PARTS REQUIRED: MOBO, RAM, CPU, keyboard, Fast Hard Drive

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Depends on the shipping to PR (cheaper with USPS)

OVERCLOCKING: Yes but not to extremes

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe; because my last board was SLI and I never used it. (So it’s not a must)

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1200

Reused Parts:

Case> Cooler Master Stacker
Power Supply> Antec Truepower 550W
CPU Heatsink > Thermal Take Big Typhoon
Video Card > EVGA 8800GTX.
Sound Card > Creative X-Fi Gamer
Extra Hard Drives > (2X) 250GB SATA
Mouse > Logitech MX518

I would like suggestions on the Board, RAM and Fast Hard Drive.

THANKS!

when did you buy the PSU?

just asking because you might not get an i7 rig into your budget if you need a new psu.

since $288 for the i7, $240 for a decent motherboard or an extra $40 if you want high-end, $100 for some 1600mhz ram. that's about $630 already if you go for the mid-end board, then add an extra $110 for a corsair 650tx PSU, then the HDD. And then you have shipping to add to that.

My power supply its an Antec TruePower 550W.

By that time (2006) it was decent PSU.

In my opinion its sufficient to run this rig without OC since i will not SLI.

I used the PSU calculator and it showed a load of 429Watts.

On the topic:

I found the proccessor for $265 HERE

I have been reading and i am inclined toward a Asus board...but my man; I am 3 years behind of technology!

Do you have any suggestions on specific models???

Help Appreciated!

mine comes to 680w if I take everything into account e.g capacitor aging for the age of the PSU, 3 hdd's etc, that's before adding the second 8800GTX though.

you'll want a new PSU if you plan on running that PC, a 650TX should last you about 4 years. and you'll have gone over your budget by about $40.

I really doubt that THIS PSU cant handle an i7 and a single 8800GTX.

The 8800GTX can draw an absolute maximum of: (six-pin connectors x2) + PCIe > 150W +75W=225W

The 920 i7 tops @ 130W.

Thats 355W ...so I still have 195Watts to run 3 Hard Drives, RAM, X-fi Gamer, mouse, keyboard, mobo.

So far I have picked:

Core 920 i7

ASUS P6T (but still doesnt know if the Deluxe V2 is worth the extra bucks)

OCZ Platinum OCZ3P1600LV6GK

Can anyone recomend a FAST hard drive???

I didint.

MOBO=Motherboard.

By the way...ASUS swears that his CAPS are made of "ultra quality" so lets believe them that the loss due to the dielectric will be less.

Those 25W will come into the ecuation eventually...logaritmically. So I will buy a PSU in the next months since thats my strong field and I can take my time doing some reaserch on the meantime.

Now...i am in a hurry.

I just need the system up and running; LATER I can do the overclocking and PSU thing.
