No diling sound in PC speaker

I recently had a PC knowledgeable friend do an update repair on XP Pro, install IE 8, and AOL 9.6 one one of my dual boot drives. Since that time I cannot hear the modem dailing sounds in the PC speaker, althought they are present in the external speakers. I have checked several configurations, modem, AOL, Sounds, networks, etc. to no avail. Does anyone have any thoughts as to how to return the modem dialing sounds to the PC speaker?
