Hi, I had a few Dell Optiplex GX260 to restore for friends and family members, these computers were handed out as a computer for schools program to pupils in the UK about 5 or 6 years ago, the problem I've found with them (not to mention faulty capacitor & dodgy overvolting USB ports (which I disabled)) is even though they have a COA license for home edition two out of the five machine would not activate online after a reinstall of the OS, has anyone else had this issue with Dell machines or any other manufacturer.

If you use a Dell Windows XP CD, there is no activation.

I did use one of the Dell CD's but it only happend with 2 out of the 5 PC's, which I thought was strange.

Maybe the bios or the motherboard are scrambled on just the 2 pc's. they were notorious for that.

FWIW, I've never had to activate Windows on a Dell using a Dell Windows CD and I've probably reloaded over a thousand Dell computers.

I haven't reloaded that many, around 150ish, but these 2 were a first when they asked for activation (wierd). All the machines are exactly the same model and spec (2.4Ghz P4, 512 RAM, 40GB HDD, PCI Modem Connexient 56Kbps), I'll try swapping the hard drive from the activated one and see if that works.

Swapping the hard drive actually worked and the motherboards are genuine dell (Small Form Factor, not the standard atx type), wiered.
