Laptop wont detect ANY DVD drives - Any ideas?

Hi there all. I have 2 laptops, both of which refuse to detect any DVD drives. I have tried with 3 different drives in both laptops. I know they are connected properly, as the drives power up and will eject etc, but are not visisble in nor the BIOS or windows. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you tried to install the main chipset drive from laptop manufacturer's website? Also are the drives internal or external?

Yeah I have tried. It used to come up on bootup if I pressed F12 to boot from it. The drive is an internal one. It has 1 built-in connector to the motherboard with it being a laptop. I just dont understand why there is power to the drive yet it fails to read it.
