8800 GTX vs 9800 GTX plus

Hi

I had a Nvidia "8800 GTX 768mb" card that I had to replace due to overheating. now the guys at the store are willing to replace it for a "9800 GTX plus 512mb".
I would like to know your opinion if this is a good trade.

short answer, no.

long answer, no because the 9800gtx+ has a 256bit bandwidth, versus the 8800gtx's 384bit. Second, the 9800gtx+ only has 512mb of DDR3, versus the 8800gtx's 768mb. more bandwidth and more memory equal a better card. Otherwise I believe they're very similar. Both have 128 stream processors and both have the same older G92 architecture, correct me if im wrong. the only difference being manufacturing process ( less heat, less power used ) and a higher clock speed as a result of lower heat output. the small difference in clock speed only gives the 9800gtx+ a small advantage at low resolutions, anything greater than 1440x900, and im betting you'd see the 8800gtx pull well ahead. Demand that they give you a GTX260 core 216 ( new architecture, and more stream processors than the original GTX260 ), and take the earlier GTX260 if that's all you can get.

The 9800GTX is almost the same as the 8800GTX, the only difference is 1 to 3 FPS more. Thats becauce is based on a smaller nanometer, 65nm and the 8800GTX is 90nm that means the 9800GTX can achieve a higher frequency on the GPU, Shader clock, and memory clock speed and produce less heat.

yes get the 9800GTX even though is 512mb you won't tell the diference.

one more thing try to get a EVGA or a BFG, they both have LIFE TIME WARRANTY!

XFX is better with "double lifetime warranty" - means you can sell the card and the buyer gets the lifetime warranty so long they register the card. Plus, I bought an EVGA 8800 GTS 512 recertified that died 2 weeks after its 90 day warranty expired and EVGA told me to go fly a kite. Sucked up the $120 cost for the card and vowed never to buy EVGA again.

does this influence performance or just power consumption?

mcnuggetofdeath, are you saying that 9800gtx+ has less performance due to this fact? cause the shop are looking to replace with something similar to my previous card and not better.

Smaller architecture (55 nm) allows for better performance because of less heat generated

That means a slightly better performance in gaming

Performance is the same as the 8800gtx because of higher core clocks.My 9800gtx
core clock is 740 stock and runs verycool at 42 idle 60load.Can overclock to over
800 and remains cool although I run mine at stock becanse all my games run great
maxed out.Go for the 9800gtx+,you'll love it.

Despite the 8800GTX having more bandwidth, the 9800GTX performs slightly better than 8800GTX in most benchmarks out there.

Add on the fact that the 8800GTX gives off more heat, consumes more power, is out of production, and has more limited SLi options, the 9800GTX is the better card out of the two.

No company in hell is gonna give you a GTX260 192 or 216 for a 8800GTX unless you pay money for the upgrade fee.

A 9800GTX is already considered an upgrade from an 8800GTX. He should ask for a 9800GTX+ (which is slightly better than the 9800GTX, thus making it better than the 8800GTX), and at best, he can get a GTS250.

Not trying to be rude but if some of you had read the OP closely you would see he said they would replace it with a 9800 GTX+ he just typed the word out instead of using the symbol.

The Geforce 9800 GTX+ does bring better performance than the 8800 GTX.

Accounting for clock speed differences and architectural optimizations the 9800 GTX+ should perform better and use less power.

Generally the 9800GTX+ is better. For one, there were some optimizations made to the G92 architecture that help it preform better than the G80. The 384-bit memory interface was too expensive so improvements had to be made to allow for similar performance with a 256-bit interface along with a reduced number or ROPs. The G92b is a smaller version of the G92 allowing for higher clock speeds which allows the 9800GTX+ to have a significant performance advantage over the older G80 based 8800GTX. At settings that make use of more than 512MB of Ram though that performance advantage shrinks or even allows the older G80 chip to come out slightly ahead. Still, overall I'd say that it's not a bad trade and you will come out slightly ahead as far as performance goes.
