OK, I'm sure you have all heard these before, but here goes nothing. I
just got a nice raise and I'm looking at my buying my first laptop. The
Dell Inspiron 9100 looks nice as does the easy financing terms (I would
end up paying more interest using a credit card), but the 3 week plus
lead time doesn't, and I have heard some negative comments about Dell
build quality. What are some other alternatives for a desktop
replacement with good sound quality? Is the Pentium M worthwhile for
gaming?

Both Compaq Presario X1000 series and HP Pavilion zt3000 series ship with
Pentium M, fast graphic card and JBL Pro speakers. And they're only a little
more expensive than the Compaqs mentioned by you.

Not in 1998, which is when the first posting indexed under this thread started.

I decided to order the Dell Inspiron 9100, warts and all. I know Roland
won't be happy, but the promise of blazing performance was too hard to
pass up. The ~2hr battery life isn't great, but with a spare battery it
will last as long as my short little attention span. Approximate
delivery date is 4/27. We'll see how they do on that. If they jerk me
around too much, I'll cancel and go with the Compaq/HP that Jeff
suggested. It does sound like a good compromise between battery life and
performance for less money and similar financing terms.
