Right now my os is running on a 5900 1 T hard drive So I know pretty much anything is going to be an upgrade. I have many extra drives so space isn't really a problem. I know that putting my OS on a SSD would make it run extremly fast but here are my questions.
First I am wondering is it better to get a bigger SSD drive so I can put more then just my OS on it or is having a SSD strickly for an OS the best idea?
Second question- if it is smarter to have a SSD strickly for the OS then should I look into getting another SSD for other programs? I have Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s. I am not sure if putting programs onto it would be good enough or if there would be a big difference.
Last question I am looking at a few SSDs right now and I wanted to get others opionions on them. just in case the url isn't working I am going to put what the link should take you to.
this OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD3-2VTX120G 3.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive
or Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1CCA 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive
or this Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive
Or should I wait tell the next gen comes out? Does anyone know when the next gen is coming out I have heard anywhere from begining of Feb to the end of the 2nd quarter. If it's more toward the latter I would rather get something now because I am not an extremly patient person.
My preference would be to buy one SSD which is large enough to hold the OS and your application programs, and install both to it. The applications will load much faster if they're on an SSD, and having separate SSDs for OS and applications won't really gain you anything and it will bring the hassle of having to juggle the available space on two drives instead of one. Better IMHO to get one drive with a decent amount of spare space to allow for potential future growth.
Sorry, I don't any experience with the SSDs you've listed so I can't really comment on them...
The boot thing doesn't really impress me .... I start up my puter in the morning and whether I am grabbing a cup of joe, listening to my phone messages or whatever, the box is ready long before I am ready to use it. Same thing opening programs....after clicking the launch button, I'm grabbing the paper copy of what I am about to work on and the program is open long before I am ready to start working on it.
Where ya will see the biggest benefit , assuming you are using programs that use it, is in page file, temp file, scratch disk usage etc.
As for ya choices, the C300 has the fastest read speeds ..... the Vertex 2 is my fav and the 120 GB is almost always discounted.
