I was wanting to see if I can upgrade from my NVidia 6600 card. I'll eventually get a new mboard that does pci-e or pci-x but right now, I want to play with what I have. I've been an NVidia fan since VooDoo went out of business years ago but I'd be willing to use ATI if I can find a comparable card. Basically, I'm open to any suggestions for brands.

I play WoW and CS mostly.

My system:

Mboard: ECS NForce3-A ver 1.0
CPU: AMD 3000+ overclocked @ 2.15GHz
RAM: 2GB PNY
Current Video Card: NVidia GeForce 6600
Monitor: ViewSonic VA902b

save the money on a new Graphics Card for a new system, AGP is dead
but, at least you don't have the s478 P4 that everyone comes here to upgrade

for like $600 you can get a much better system

HD 3650. Unless you can get that CPU higher.
IIRC, The last Nvidia AGP card was a 7800GS? I have no idea :lol: But they don't make em' anymore. I still find ATI AGP card drivers to be a bit "flakey".

For WoW i'd get the HD4650 AGP available now at newegg for $100 or maybe wait for Powercolor to ship the HD4670 AGP.

I say go with a 3650 or a 2600XT. While the 4650 is faster your slow CPU will mean that you probably won't see much improvement over a 2600XT thus being a waste of money for you. Even then, the power color 3850 is cheaper and considerably faster (mostly because of the 4650s very limiting memory bandwidth). For some reason new egg also seems to have a 6800 Ultra AGP in stock (though $104 for the 256MB version is over priced in my opinion) so you may want to consider getting that if you have trouble getting a Radeon card to run in your system. AGP Radeon cards can be a little, difficult, since they aren't really supported by AMD anymore.

Id say live with the 6600 untill you get $500-$600 saved up for a new PC. The fact of the matter is AGP cards are horribly overpriced, and TBH, with that CPU your not gonna see alot of improvement anyway.

Thank you for your replies. I am going to be moving up to a new system but not at the time being. The goal was to use what I have now and get the most of it. Other than being slower than what is out and about today, there really isn't anything wrong with what I have, once everything is upgraded to it's highest point. In other words, I'm not intending to trash the system, even when I get a new one. I will use this for something.

Your system pretty much already is upgraded to its highest point.

I pretty much have the same system - Abit NF8-V, Newcastle Athlon64 3000+, 1 gig of DDR 3200, 500W Antec power supply. My current card is a Radeon X850 Pro.

I cannot swing the $300 I am figuring for a full upgrade, so a new video card is in my view. Should I go with a HD 2600XT or an X1950 Pro?

^^^Actually, if you reuse as much as possible, a half decent system upgrade can be done for less than $300.

I just noticed my PSU is only 320w. I think a bigger PSU would help too. I will probably look at some of the graphic card suggestions as well and move up from the NVidia 6600.
