I'm working on Windows XP professional version 2000 SP2. The problem is when ever i try to plugin a USB device, the OS is crashing and not responding to anything except the manual restart button on the cabinet.

But the ports are working all fine without any trouble when i start my pc in Safe mode.

How do i get my USB ports to work without any trouble even when i boot my OS normally?

It is most likely on of USB device drivers that is causing problems.

Unplug all USB devices. Go to device manager, select to show hidden devices, uninstall all usb device drivers one by one followed by usb hubs and controllers, restart PC and let it install new drivers.

Plug in Your devices one by one and install drivers for them( for some devices You might need to install driver before You plug it in). If it crushes with one device then either driver is bad or device is faulty, at least You will know which is causing the problem. Now you can try to download different versions of driver for that device from manufacturers website to see if that solves problem.
