I have recently recieved all the parts to my HTPC, however I have hit a minor roadblock.
The sound card I chose for my HTPC is capable of 7.1 surround sound. It seems that most individuals connect a reciever to their HTPC for the best quality sound, however I feel that if my sound card is capable of doing it, I shouldn't have to use one.
Now the main issue at hand is connecting speakers to this sound card. The cards inputs are all mini stereo, and most surround sound speaker sets utilize the spring clip connecters. So basically I am just curious as to how you would connect the one to the other? Are there speaker wires "out there" that have mini stereo on one side and fit into the spring clip on the other? Are there speaker sets with mini stereo jacks in the back of them instead of spring clips? In the mean time all I can figure out is that I had to buy speakers made by a computer speaker company (i.e. logitech) instead of home theatre type speakers (i.e. bose), so I went with the Z-5500s from logitech which is the best I could find for the time being, even though they are only 5.1.
I realize my post is a little difficult to follow, hopefully it's understandable.
1: Z-5500's are OK; just hook them up to the optical output (you probably need to use the supplied Toslink->Spdif converter that came with the D2) and select you're output as Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect to get 5.1.
2: The reason you almost need a reciever for 7.1 is because
a: Decoders for Dolby/DTS formats
b: soundcards don't have the connections most speaker sets use
