Help Please!!
I have this laptop with no floppy or CD drive
and I installed XP over Millenium as it said
you could but, alas it did not work or install
properly. Now I have decided to take out the
hard drive (IBM) and reformat it in my home
copmputer.I have an adapter to change the cable
from one to the other (with 5v DC on separate
plug on one end)) but do not want to hook it
up backwards. Can someone point me to or help
me with a website that will show how to do this?
Many Thanks
in advance
Ron

As a rule, the cable or connector somehow have a red mark which is the
side that goes next to the power supply (those two connectors that will
not be used on the drive by the converter). Although it is physically
possible to hook it the wrong way, try it both ways without connecting
to your desktop and you will find that if it is hooked wrong, the
connector will not appear to be in line with the plug on the drive. It
should be more obvious, for sure, and I too, hesitated.

Take care

Thats true of "regular" desktop HD's, CD drives etc., but I htink you'll
find its actually the opposite with laptop drives.
But IME connecting the wrong way round won't do any harm (although don't
take that as gospel - I may have just been lucky). Certianly worth
finding out for sure from somewhere ...

Your adapter should prevent the incorrect installation of both the power
cable and IDE connector. Mine makes it physically impossible due to both
connector designs.

.....

I have used a 2.5" hard disk drive installation kit with my Sony Vaio hard
drive in a desktop several times. You can purchase these at Microcenter.

The packaging is quite generic (white with red lettering). However, it does
say

CONTENTS: 01-4065-D KIT, DRIVE MT, 2.5" HDD
12-6060-B KIT, PCB ADAPTER

PRODUCT OF TAIWAN

Look at the hard drive. You will see four pins spaced 2mm apart from
the 44 pin interface. Looking at the drive from the rear, with the
PCBA down, those four pins (jumper pins) will be on the right-hand
side.

Your adapter cable plugs into the main 44-pin section of the
connector. The power pins are on the left-hand side if you are holding
the drive as I describe above. The pin 1 stripe on the ribbon cable is
on the right-hand side, nearest the four jumper pins.
