Hi again Tom's Hardware,

So my girlfriend's several year old POS laptop has finally copped out, luckily I got her a nice All-in-one for X-mas =). In any case, she's a mess because of all of the pictures/music/documents for her major, etc. that have been lost. Here is the error message being shown:

\windows\system32\config\system

0xc000014c - Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is the data on the HDD still in tact? The hard drive IS showing up in the BIOS from when I glanced, so perhaps if we just have an OS cd to boot from it will work?

I really appreciate your help TH, I know that I can always count on the great community here for advice! =D

If it's simply the registry missing, you can boot from another OS and read the data off this drive. I have a feeling that a virus removed your registry... and more. If you are able to view the drive when booting from another OS, I'd run a virus/malware scan on it immediately.
