Low-profile RAM versus high profile RAM

What's the difference between low and high profile RAM

Generally low and high profile should indicate how tall the sits when installed in the slots.
There can be fit problems with aftermarket cpu coolers with high profile ram chips.
I can't believe there would be any reference to performance as that should be specified as high performance, adversely nobody would advertise low performance.
