Depending upon the GPUs contained in each, generaly speaking the X2 4600 should always perform better.

For single threaded games(oldies) the P4 might be better.

But for newer games Athlon is better.

AMD x2 4600+ FTW! Try using Toms CPU charts. This shows the 4600 but no mention of the P4, so you can be rest assured the AMD is better for gaming...

AMD 64 x2 will be better than the P4 in almost every way, and if the rest of your hardware allows, you should get a decent overclock on that CPu to make single threaded agmes run more than happily, the P4 is now very old and long in the tooth.

The 4600X2. It's not even a contest Even in older single threaded applications that P4 might, maybe, possibly, come up just behind the 4600X2, but in general the 4600 will just blow it away. You can see a comparision on the older CPU charts

The 3.4GHz Intel Pentium 4 650 is pretty near the bottom.

Yes you should be able to swap out the power supplies without any problems.

The single-core 2gHz Sempron scored higher on that chart than the 650.

^ yes, but it was a socket AM2 Semperion with dual channel DDR2-800, compared to the DDR2-533 the P4 was tested with. That Semperion is basically an Athlon 64 with some of its cache disabled so with the faster RAM it makes sense that it would score higher. Of course those results are still well below the 4600 X2.
