I currently have a mobo with dual sockets that had a Xeon 3.2 cpu.
With HT enabled i get 2 cores inside windows taskmanger, msinfo32 and so on.

I just installed another CPU in the second slot, and even though msinfo32 shows 4x 3.20 cpus, task manager only shows 2, also CPU-Z shows 2 x cpus x 1 thread.

If I disable HT in the bios I get the same results (obviously) but just 2 x 3.2 in msinfo32.

Whats going on?

Is this a windows 7 specific issue? or do I need to reinstall for it to pick up all the cores.

/first post, hopefully the right section, and hope for a reply/help ;)

I would run a repair of win 7.

With 2P hardware you need an OS to recognize the second microprocessor - that means XP Pro or Vista Ultimate.

Is there a Win7 Ultimate RC?

I have the full Windows 7 Ultimate Retail.. I have a msdn license

You may need to do a clean install of Windows to go from single to dual socket, I'm almost certain of that.

That's probably true - a multiprocessor system requires a different HAL.

you can do "Detect HAL" in msconfig so you dont have to do a reinstall.

Start --> Run --> MSCONFIG --> Boot --> Advanced Options --> Check detect HAL --> Reboot

I hope that helps.

Yes it is. I use it all the time to eliminate start up items.

I wonder if no news is good news?

s604 is getting a little long in the tooth - Could it be an OS support issue?
