I'm wannting a base system just for running VMs. 16GB memory or better. Is there a solid board that someone can suggest and consider that price is an issue, not an unlimited budget. Looking for basic system that has lots of memory.
better yet, what is the budget, i know of a board that can support 144GB of mem with 2 x LGA 1366 (Xeon), though $450 (cpu(s) and mem wil be expensive though)
CPU, doesn't matter much, personal lab so anything that is available today will be suffiecient. GPU, no difference either. I will have a mixture of win & linux, no care in the world for anything special on graphics -- basic is good.
Budget, that is a little flexible but if I can stock it with 4 GB now and then incriment I'm good with that. 16 would fit the bill great, don't need too much more. If there was a board that support low/mid 20's, that could be possible but likely tops. 12 would probably suffice. If I can setup a base MB, some ram and no thrills beyond that for $500-700 then great.
It is for my home to lab out system configs. Mixing Win AD and linux with various setups. I"m a systems admin but lacking in much of the specifics on the availability of hardware that is out there. Desktop style unit that supports a decent amount of ram is basically what I'm looking for. I'm a little out of touch with where we are hardware wise in this area for my needs. I don't want to get a RAM style that is about to be obsoleted (upgrading the RAM every few months or so) or to get a MB that has RAM type that is the most expensive. And also, help with not getting the crappy board that will die in 6 months...
